In 1960, 228 small coffee farmers in San Marcos de Tarrazú formed Coopetarrazú. Their goal was to share profits fairly and give small farmers a voice, which was dominated by large producers before. Today, Coopetarrazú helps over 5,000 members with advice, cheap loans, and affordable fertilizers. Most members have farms smaller than 4 hectares. The coop provides jobs for about 10,000 people year-round, working in coffee growing and related tasks. Coopetarrazú manages the whole coffee process—from harvest to export—ensuring steady quality every year.
